Mother Teresa
Through divine inspiration she
devoted herself
to caring for the sick and poor.

In her own words:

There is a terrible hunger for love.
We all experience that in our lives
- the pain, the loneliness.
We must have the courage to recognize it.
The poor you may have right in your own family.
Find them.
Love them.

Do not think that love, in order to be genuine,
has to be extraordinary.
What we need is to love without getting tired.

"God has his own ways and means
to work in the hearts of men,
and we do not know
how close they are to him.
By their actions
we will always know
whether they are at God's disposal or not."

It is easy to love the people far away.
It is not always easy to love those close to us.
It is easier to give a cup of rice to relieve hunger
than to relieve the loneliness and pain of
someone unloved in our own home.
Bring love into your home for this is where
our love for each other must start.

Kind words can be short and easy to speak,
but their echoes are truly endless.

Let us always meet each other with smile,
for the smile is the beginning of love.

Let us touch the dying, the poor,
the lonely and the unwanted
according to the graces
we have received and
let us not be ashamed
or slow to do the humble work.

Love begins at home, and it is not how much we do…
but how much love we put in that action.

The hunger for love is much more difficult to remove
than the hunger for bread.

We ourselves feel that what we are doing
is just a drop in the ocean.
But the ocean would be less because of that missing drop."

"We shall never know all the good that a simple smile can do."

"The dying, the cripple, the mental, the unwanted, the unloved-
- they are Jesus in disguise."

"To me, God and compassion are one and the same.
Compassion is the joy of sharing.
It’s doing small things for the love of each other
-just a smile, or carrying a bucket of water,
or showing some simple kindness.
These are the small things that make up compassion. "

"It is only pride and selfishness and coldness
that keep us from having compassion.
When we ultimately go home to God,
we are going to be judged on what we were to each other,
what we did for each other, and, especially,
how much love we put in that.
It’s not how much we give,
but how much love we put in the doing ~
that’s compassion in action. "

"We think sometimes
that poverty is only being hungry, naked and homeless.
The poverty of being unwanted, unloved and uncared for
is the greatest poverty.
We must start in our own homes
to remedy this kind of poverty."

"We, the unwilling,
led by the unknowing,
are doing the impossible
for the ungrateful.
We have done so much, for so long, with so little,
we are now qualified to do anything with nothing."

"Love each other as God Loves you,
with an intense and particular Love.
Be Kind to each other:
It is better to commit faults with gentleness
than to work miracles with unkindness."

"Speak tenderly to them.
Let there be kindness in your face,
in your eyes, in your smile,
in the warmth of your greeting.
Always have a cheerful smile.
Don't only give your care,
but give your heart as well."

"We must not drift way from the humble works,
because these are the works nobody will do.
It is never too small.
But God, being Almighty, sees everything as great..
Very humble work,
that is where you and I must be.
For there are many people who can do big things.
But there are very few people who will do the small things."

"Words which do not give the light of Christ
increase the darkness."

"When a poor person dies of hunger,
it has not happened
because God did not
take care of him or her.
It has happened
because neither you nor I
wanted to give that person
what he or she needed."

I am a little pencil in the hand of a writing God
who is sending a love letter to the world.

Mother Teresa referred to herself as a pencil—
saying that God was doing the writing.
She stated that she was merely the “instrument”
for God to “work through”.
